How is coal made?
Coal is formed from the remains of trees and plants which grew millions of years ago. They delayed and sank into the ground, and were pressed under layers of rock and other minerals.
As this vegetation dried up, it turned into peat, then into coal. The Coal is found underground in layers called seams. Mines have to be make in order to dig it out. Coal is a very useful product. Not only is it used as fuel but also in the manufacture of such things as dyes and insecticides.

Major recoverable coal reserve is in USA and other large reserve are in Russia, Australia, China, India and south Africa. Highest coal producing contries are China, USA and India.Major coal exporters Australia, Indonesia and China.

ok we all agree that it takes 10ft of peat to make 1ft of coal and that it happened by pressure being applied to the peat over a period of time BUT what level of sediment etc would be needed to apply sufficient pressure to turn say 10ft of peat into 1ft of coal??? 100ft ... 1000ft???
